Water Filters

During Term 3 LS2 created water filters! Our goal was to filter out very dirty water using materials around the school and provided ones. My group first set off to walk around the school to find the things we needed. Although, we only had a limited amount of time outside to find our items and build our filters. Every group used a 1.5 l bottle to use as the main base of our water filters. The items provided was charcoal, coffee filters, cloth and rubber bands. In the end during our test we found out that the sand we had wasn't very fine so the sand just absorbed most the water so not very much filtered out.

Provocation and Opinion.

Currently, I have created a provocation and opinion DLO about a major supermarket chain that is currently no longer selling energy drinks in their supermarkets to kids under the age of 16. My opinion and two perspectives to this is included in the DLO I have created above. I think that they made a good idea to ban these energy drinks as it could affect a child's health.

Explanation: Should NZ ban plastic straws?

Greetings all. Do you enjoy using divine, mess free plastic straws? Well… A single drinking straw is actually affecting our environments in New Zealand. Each day nearly 500 million plastic straws are being used. A quarter of this amount is from New Zealand as 65,000 straws have been found on our beaches. Plastic straws pollute our oceans, land and air. But the problem gets even worse when they break down into small particles which releases their chemicals everywhere.

Did you know that plastic straws are actually one of the main reasons why the digestive systems of many marine animals are damaged? That the air slowly gets more polluted each day when these straws break down into many chemicals? All these problems can and are still being caused by plastic straws. Most plastic straws don’t biodegrade in the ocean and they are being consumed by poor animals that live in the sea or on land! This is just cruel and absolutely disgusting to the many animals that are living their lives with plastic straws in their bodies and slowly killing them, all because of us. Although, not only is this affecting innocent creatures lives but also the land we live on and the air we breathe.

Imagine the amount of pollution that is spreading around New Zealand, imagine the pain poor creatures endure nearly each day and imagine how you would feel if a single plastic straw corrupts your digestive system. This is because of our actions. Even if we only use just one a day it still increases the amount of plastic straws that are harming the earth.

Currently, companies such as fast food restaurants around New Zealand are banning plastic straws to eliminate the amount of straws we use each day. Sure it may be a bit more mess free and enjoyable to use but the amount of harm it does is insane. Also, people around New Zealand are helping by using metal straws. They can be reused over and over again and they can be put away until your next drink.

Plastic straws are affecting New Zealand and I say we should put a stop to this. If we stop using plastic straws the number of them harming the earth will decrease and save our environment from bigger trouble. You could save the life of a single creature right now by not using plastic straws. So give it a try for the sake of New Zealand!

Rhythm Interative's visit to PBS

Today Panmure Bridge got the amazing opportunity to have a drumming experience with our drumming teacher (visitor) John Boone featuring Wilson! LS2 was able to help the junior kids by helping with the beat of the drums and paying attention. John Boone did not only teach us a lot of drumming skills but there was a reason (theme) behind it. The theme was: Together we can make a change. Everyone listened carefully to the beat, rhythm and pattern on the drums. We all enjoyed the lesson as we had fun interacting with the drums! Another message he included was "If you can say it you can drum it." The drums we used were African drums which are called Djembe. Did you know Djembe actually translates to "brings joy"? Although, everyone had a fun time and a big thank you for John Boone for teaching us a lot of amazing drumming skills and together we can all make a change!

Tech (cooking)

Today the year 8s group b had cooking tech today. Mrs Heka was not here today so Mrs Alice was our teacher. We filled out safety, health and hazard forms, named the different equipment and we also did two word searches. If we completed and filled out those forms we had the opportunity to make a health poster when working in the kitchen. My poster was about keeping safe when it comes to sharp object in the kitchen. While completing and filling out some of the forms we helped each other in case someone was stuck. I was stuck on finding some of the words in the word search and luckily the people around me helped out. The words were linked to different vegetables. The word I found the hardest to find was beetroot since it was going diagonal across the page. 

Literary Devices.

This week I have made a google doc (table) about literary devices. The literary devices in the google document are Metaphors, similes, Hyperbole, Personification, Alliteration and Onomatopoeia. I have written the meaning about each one and I have included pictures for an example. This also gave me a recap about each literary device so I have a better understanding of them. 

Metal Tech.

Today was group b's last session at metal tech. We all had a very fun time from the very beginning to end. I was able to finish my cake server and I am really proud on how it turned out. Although, today we tested out our final designs. We had two pizzas made fresh from Miss Heather so a big thank you to her. I would also like to say a big thank you to Mr Naicker for helping us during Metal Tech. Everyone was able to test out their Pizza Cutters and I was able to test out my Cake Server. I am really proud of my final design and I really enjoyed metal tech this year!

Sun Facts

For reading this term Rakino and Waiheke has joined up to complete a range of tasks (challenges), reading books linked to our topic space. The first book I read was Sun Facts. The article included multiple facts about the sun. I have listed three facts I found the most interesting in the story. Below them I have written more facts the book had included. I really enjoyed reading this book as everything was easy and clear to read. I was also able to have a learning conversation with my partner Mele about the book as we both read it and found it very interesting.

First up / DLO

For reading this term I have completed a range of tasks reading books linked to our topic space! The second book I had read was First Up. I really enjoyed reading First Up as I was able to learn more about the adventure Yuri Gagarin went through. The story is very interesting and everything was clear and easy to read. I have explained about the photos in my DLO using the book and a little bit of my basic knowledge. Victoria and I also had a dialogical conversation! Her comment and feed back was positive and also included a question. I replied and we had a positive learning conversation responding to each others questions and replies.

NZSL Week

Last week was NZSL week. I have made a DLO explaining when sign language was the third official language in New Zealand and many other facts. I have a picture on the side of the DLO to show how to sign the main colours in the rainbow and a couple more extra. I am really proud to have learnt a couple words in sign language and how to spell out the alphabet. 

Times table challenge.

Today I completed my times tables maths challenge. I did the seven times table's challenge again but this time I improved a bit in timing. I was able to complete the challenge in 1 minute 9 seconds which was great.

Nyjah - I am an Agent Of Change.

Today I have made my Agent Of Change DLO. I have written down what I need to achieve to become an Agent Of Change, How I can become an Agent Of Change and What an Agent Of Change is. An Agent Of Change shows respect, tolerance, participates in multiple events, stay's on task, listens to other people's ideas and shares there ideas. Three main things I personally think makes a good Agent Of Change is to take risks, step out of there comfort zone and set goals for themselves. 

Time's table practise.

Today I have practised my 7 times tables skill. I am really proud that I was able to pass on both of the tests. Although I was a bit slow on answering so I need to work on remembering the answer really fast. I think I can improve next time but over all I think I have done really well today!

NZ WW1 Life On A Transport Ship.

For this activity Julian, Victoria, Alex and I made a DLO explaining about the WW1 NZ Transport Ship. We had found out a lot of information about the inside of the ship and how soldiers had to be cramped up in such a little space. It isn't as luxury as most people thought. Instead, it is very cramped and there is a huge difference between officers and unlisted soldiers. The officers had comfy beds, good food whilst the unlisted soldiers slept on the floor or on some beds and didn't have the same amount of good food.

Hunua Falls and Kokako Bird drawing.

This week Victoria and I has been doing a fun and productive job. I had drawn the Hunua Falls and Victoria had drawn the Kokako Bird. We are really proud of how it turned out, but for me I felt really stressed because I wasn't familiar with drawing a whole picture of a water fall! Although I am really happy that I was able to finish it and I am really proud of Victoria's drawing too. We both worked really hard. Our drawing is going to be apart of LS2's thank you letters too all the teachers and instructors who helped us through camp. Without them camp wouldn't be as fun. So this is our collaborative thank you!

Kokako Infographic

This is my DLO about the Kokako bird. One fun fact about the Kokako bird is that it was brought back from extinction! It had almost been extinct because of its poor flight. It relies on there legs the most to jump around either branch to branch or on the ground. They have a amazing appearance and a blue beautiful tuff underneath its beak. On my infographic it explains the diet or the Kokako bird, the habitat, the appearance, the skill and a little summary of the south island Kokako bird.

Tech

Today was another amazing day at tech. This time in Metal Work with Mr Naicker I was able to move on from sanding down my handle and polishing it. I was able to get it nice and smooth ready to put the actual cake server part on. Although before I do that I have to let the polish on the handle dry so that handle doesn't stain.

Blog Post Data Analysis.

 

Today I have made a DLO about my blog post analysis throughout the years. I think throughout my digital years I am really proud of what I have achieved. In my first year of using a device was really exciting. I was very proud of what I had achieved. I was able to get 186 in my first year! My DLO explains why the results are like this and how I could of improved. If you would like to find out the rest of the results they can be found on my DLO above.

2019 Manaiakalani Leader

Today at assembly the leaders were officially announced and received there badges. I am now proud to say that I have achieved my goal to become your Manaiakalani leader for 2019. As your Manaiakalani leader I will help to motivate students with digital learning. I am very confident when presenting my work or when I am genuinely helping others. Congratulations to the new Head boy and Girl and the Sports people. 

Colour theory - Tech

Today for tech the year 7s has practised colouring patterns and generally colouring in. We firstly made our own colour wheel and learnt about the three prime colours. Red,Blue and Yellow. Here is the link to my colour wheel Colour theory I learnt that red,blue and yellow are primary colours because when they mix these colours come out as secondary. Green, Purple and orange. Although you can make darker colours depending on how much of the other colour you mix with another prime colour. Next we drew out a logo and colour it in with Analogous and complementary colours. Analogous means same or close colours like with mine I used purple, dark blue and a normal shade of blue. Complementary is like the opposite of primary colours for example my green,orange and red / pink coloured in fire fox.
