Personification writing piece.

Small pieces of rocks, grass and stones stuck in me isn’t such a pleasant feeling. The pain being inflicted on my body hurts badly. Stepping on poop smells DISGUSTING and UNCOMFORTABLE!!! At this point I couldn’t bare to breathe with the unbearable scents surrounding me. Falling into a nasty, smelly, puddle made me soaked and smelly!! I’m starting to think that my only source of food is the stale bubblegum stuck to the floor with each step my owner took on them. Gross… Does my owner even have eyes? Each step my owner took was on one of the most disgusting parts on the ground (puddles, poop, bubble gum and rocks). I’m yearning for the day when I get brought back to the shoe store...

Written by | Nyjah and Chavda

Today, Chavda and I has written a personification writing piece about shoes. Personification is non living objects that has human qualities or abilities. We associated our story with shoes because we use them everyday. Although, the twist was we sat back to back and we couldn't speak while we wrote. Chavda and I had no problem writing this writing piece together as most of our ideas were similar and if they weren't we simply just changed some of our sentences to fit our liking. We used the 5 senses in our writing piece.

Let me tell you about my favourite cultural celebration.

Let me tell you about my favourite cultural celebration.

Let me tell you about Christmas. Christmas, is one of my favourite celebrations in the world! A few days before Christmas, my family and I go on a shopping spree for presents, clothes and food. Usually, each year my parents take my siblings and I individually out on different days to go shopping for each others presents. I enjoy buying my brothers and family members gifts! The excitement I see from them makes me ecstatic. Before going shopping I take secret notes on what my brothers will really like. Currently this year I know that my oldest brother Jericho, enjoys playing games, talking to his friends through devices (such as the Playstation and his Ipad) and food. My youngest brother, Sasuke, enjoys playing on the playstation, making short vlogs on his phone and playing sports. During time between the 20th - 25th of December I prepare a list of gifts I should buy for my brothers.

Last year, I remember waking up super early with a large smile across my face. I threw the covers off and dashed towards… The kitchen! I see my Grandmother up and early cooking a delicious meal! Ham with a beautiful sauce over it with rings of pineapple, cherry and a crispy layer of skin on the outside. On the other side of the table I see four large cakes with a lovely layer of frosting over the top. But the best part is when the rest of my family comes over… We all sit down in the main room, open presents, have a laugh, eat delicious food and enjoy the company and love of our family~

Today I have created a 5 / 7 / 10 about my favourite cultural celebration. Christmas! Although, to break down what 5 / 7  / 10 means is I had 5 minutes to write and after that 5 minutes I had to check my writing with a partner (or multiple people) for 7 minutes and finally, 10 minutes of finishing my writing off. In my writing piece, our main focus was looking and placing commas in correctly.

Provocation and Opinion.

Currently, I have created a provocation and opinion DLO about a major supermarket chain that is currently no longer selling energy drinks in their supermarkets to kids under the age of 16. My opinion and two perspectives to this is included in the DLO I have created above. I think that they made a good idea to ban these energy drinks as it could affect a child's health.

Explanation: Should NZ ban plastic straws?

Greetings all. Do you enjoy using divine, mess free plastic straws? Well… A single drinking straw is actually affecting our environments in New Zealand. Each day nearly 500 million plastic straws are being used. A quarter of this amount is from New Zealand as 65,000 straws have been found on our beaches. Plastic straws pollute our oceans, land and air. But the problem gets even worse when they break down into small particles which releases their chemicals everywhere.

Did you know that plastic straws are actually one of the main reasons why the digestive systems of many marine animals are damaged? That the air slowly gets more polluted each day when these straws break down into many chemicals? All these problems can and are still being caused by plastic straws. Most plastic straws don’t biodegrade in the ocean and they are being consumed by poor animals that live in the sea or on land! This is just cruel and absolutely disgusting to the many animals that are living their lives with plastic straws in their bodies and slowly killing them, all because of us. Although, not only is this affecting innocent creatures lives but also the land we live on and the air we breathe.

Imagine the amount of pollution that is spreading around New Zealand, imagine the pain poor creatures endure nearly each day and imagine how you would feel if a single plastic straw corrupts your digestive system. This is because of our actions. Even if we only use just one a day it still increases the amount of plastic straws that are harming the earth.

Currently, companies such as fast food restaurants around New Zealand are banning plastic straws to eliminate the amount of straws we use each day. Sure it may be a bit more mess free and enjoyable to use but the amount of harm it does is insane. Also, people around New Zealand are helping by using metal straws. They can be reused over and over again and they can be put away until your next drink.

Plastic straws are affecting New Zealand and I say we should put a stop to this. If we stop using plastic straws the number of them harming the earth will decrease and save our environment from bigger trouble. You could save the life of a single creature right now by not using plastic straws. So give it a try for the sake of New Zealand!

Speeches / Why people should have more screen time?

Why people should have more screen time?

Greetings all, my name is Nyjah. We can all agree that mainly everyone has a passionate liking for screen time. Right? Well! Some people believe that screen time is bad for development but I disagree. Today, I will be possibly changing your mind about that as many people around the world has succeeded online.

Recently the last fortnite championship tournament took place on Sunday at the National Tennis Centre in New York. 16 year old Kyle Giersdorf (Bugha) won the solo competition against 99 other players! He earned 3 million dollars and many admires the skills he has. This all connects to the internet (online).

People around the world can express their talent through the internet such as entertainment, beauty, art, gaming, cooking and more. People on the internet that we know of today started small and grew in population due to their skills that is being shared online. Many groups of people at any age can be inspired to try something new because of the internet.

Large amounts of communities online help and support different kinds of real life events such as the LGBTQ community, art community, cultural communities and much more which is free and here to anyone around the world.

So much has been expressed and shared throughout the internet and this is why I think screen time helps people teach others, share skills and much more!

LI: To write a speech that persuade others to think the way you do.

This week students in Panmure Bridge School presented individual speeches to their classes so other students and teachers could vote on who would move on to the school competition in the hall. On Tuesday Mele, Jack and Marieta had the most votes and moved on to the school competition. Mele placed first, Jack second and Marieta third. Although, my speech was about why people should get more screen time. Lots of people around the world has succeeded online, started careers and earned money just by being on the internet.

Explanation writing sample.

Phasing out plastic waste.

Currently plastic waste can be found commonly worldwide.
It spreads throughout our oceans, gets dumped in landfills
or spreads across our land. Did you know that plastic has toxins
that could spread and harm our environment? Because
of this our air will be polluted while some of our wild life will
get sick or die.

When our plastic waste spreads throughout our oceans and land,
some animals will see this as food. Most marine animals think that
plastic bags are jellyfish! Or, in other cases animals will get stuck
in plastic waste and die because they won’t be able to get
untangled and free. Although, if we start to use plastic that
we can re use this could change and help our environment.

If we started using plastic that we would use over and over
again then this could decrease the amount of animals that
would die. We could use long lasting bags, reusable containers
and reusable water bottles. Not only will this help our
environments but this also will be good for us too!

So it would be great to make a change and use reusable
plastic instead. Although, sadly because of our current
actions scientists predicted that if we keep littering their
will be more waste in our ocean than fish in the middle of
the century!

So, if we started to change our actions and be aware of
the amount of plastic we use then we could decrease the harm
we are doing to our planet.

After LS2 finished our writing samples we all got in pairs to check each other writing samples. Victoria and I checked each others writing samples with the LS2 Rubric. We did this to spot each others imperfections and to decide what level we were at. We gave each other our opinions and thoughts in the table columns above to share our information and the things we spotted in each others writing samples.

Tundra Town

Tundra Town

Deep, in the depths of Atlantis a town like no other sits
and awaits the arrival of Terra.
It is known for its unimaginable magic that keeps Tundra town
alive. The buildings were a red velvet colour but the shape
was unbelievable.  Streamers were laced around and steps
were made of snow. Although this was nothing new to Terra.
She had explored lost cities around the earth. One of many
was the lost city of Atlantis which she had just explored.

As she threw on her large coat she could feel the heaviness
weigh her down. So for the time being she had took her
mammoth instead. The wind was large but the snow was
heavy among the Atlantis. As they arrived she took a deep
breath in and out. This was her first time getting a invitation
from a town she had discovered already.

The air was chilly against her face but the warm embrace
of her coat kept her sane. As she strode upon the city
she was amazed! The air heated up quickly as she
shambled up the snow stairs. “It’s been awhile Terra”
said a familiar voice. “Julia!” I say in excitement.
Thus I continued prancing around the city. . .

“Goodbye Tundra town!” I say in tears of joy.
This was the most fun and exciting after noon.
As I rode away on my mammoth I had also fed her
with one of the most famous treats. She mewled in
happiness as we rode home…

That Was Winter

This week for writing we have written a poem about our Winter stories that happened this year. We made our own version of our Winter experience which made each individual poem unique and different to each others. We also illustrated a picture from our poem and mixed the two to make it look like a journal book. I decided to draw a cup of hot chocolate because I love hot chocolate and because I enjoyed feeling the warmth and smell coming from the hot chocolate too. I really enjoyed writing this week too because we got to be creative with our drawings and poems.

Why bridges are built

Why do we build bridges?

Bridges help us today all over the world for specific reasons. Bikes, cars and skateboards use bridges to make transport faster and easier. Bridges are built to get from point A across to point B faster and easier.

Unfortunately in the past the Tamaki bridge we know today did not exist in the 18th century. Thus crossing the river was peoples only choice to get to their destination. Taking punts or boats were the only common choices to get across faster and easier. Although sometimes there was a consequence to crossing. People would drown in the process of getting across. This made the river very dangerous to some people, it was so common that drowning was called the New Zealand disease.

In the 19th century in 1865 the first bridge was built and was the start of fast transport. Currently taking a bridge is fast transport for most of us. But again traveling back in time people had to pay to cross the Tamaki bridge in the 19th century. This also was the start for dry transport.

Bridges weren’t only for dry transport, but also for boats too. Underneath bridges boats had the ability to cross without the water system crashing. This made it easier for boats to cross underneath the bridge while cars could drive on the bridge too. Some bridges that are built can actually split in half and open for boats to cross.

It’s easier to see the truth on why people build bridges now. The point was that it could save lives, faster transport and for boats to cross the river. There's much more than just the view from a bridge or just crossing it.

Today our writing group has written a explanation piece on why do we build bridges? This task included formal writing, Facts and more information telling us why we build bridges. I was able to explain the importance of why it was good for boats to cross the river underneath, It was faster transport and how they stopped many lives from drowning which was commonly named the New Zealand disease.

Colon activity.

Sentences using colons

L.I. - using colons correctly
The colons are missing from these sentences. Please add them in.

There are two choices at this time: run away or fight.
We knew who would win the game: the Eagles
He wanted to see three cities in Italy: Rome, Florence and Venice.
Remember: Two can play at that game.
She kept repeating: “I really want that car!”
Barry wanted to know why I didn’t respond to his text: I hadn’t received it.
Here are three states that begin with M: Michigan, Mississippi and Maine.
You can come pick me up now: I am feeling much better.
Never forget this point: Think before you speak.
This house has everything I need: two bedrooms, a backyard and a garage.
The town reminded me of my childhood vacations: both were on the beach.
I have several favorite genres of movies: drama, science fiction and mystery.
This was first said by Shakespeare: “To thine own self be true.”
I bought a lot of meat at the store: bacon, turkey, chicken and tuna.
The world’s a stage: play your role well.
The new boss has many nice traits: friendly, outgoing and fair.
These are my favourite colours: purple, turquoise, pink and yellow.

For writing I have learned about colons and how they work. We had a task to do that really made our brains think. Although I really enjoyed the task because I found it kind of easy. I found the first task easy because I could identify the pauses in sentences and that's how I knew where the colons were supposed to be. The second bit to this activity was to illustrate one of the sentences in the first activity. I decided that the last sentence was simple and easy for me to illustrate so I did that one. After that I have written a short description of how the colon was used in the sentence I chose.

Sensory Verbs

For writing today, we have started with sensory verbs. The key word in the word is Sense. Sense stands for the five senses. Touch, Hearing, Smell, Sight and Taste. Those five words listed our are senses.  I have decided that the most time consuming one was the picture above. We also had a quiz, that we had to solve. For example using the picture above again you have to choose which sense would fit.

Speech mark texting story.

“Hi!” said Nathaniel.
“Hi Nathaniel.” replied River.
“We are going to the movies later,
want to tag along?”
asked Nathaniel.
“Sure!” said River.
“Okay me, Travis and Aaron will see you at 6.”
replied Nathaniel.
“Okay see you later!” said River.

Today Ms Kirkpatrick's writing group has had another speech mark practise by using the fake I phone texting site >Fake I phone texting site. This is a really good practise for us and to use speech marks properly. We started writing a normal conversation on the Iphone texting site and finished off writing on a google doc. Although we used speech marks to edit the messages on the doc. This was a fun yet easy task because we practised and did this exercise last week.

“How is chemistry?” asked Chevrolet

“Oh, what did you draw though?” texted Luna
“Sunrise on the horizon” replied Chevrolet
“Okay well I gotta go or else I'll get to distracted” Luna said

it just doesn’t mean a thing.

The Tunnel

The Tunnel

A long trail leading to a new mystery. A glint of light piercing through the tall, dark, spooky trees.
It lead me right to a tunnel made of twigs.
Hiking through the damp forest I have never seen this type of surprise before.
A trail leading to a underground cave as dark as night.
My eyes caught sight of emerald green stones lying within the cave.
Eyes sparkling the colour blue watching the emerald stones shimmering like stars.
The aroma of daisies filled the air with their stunning scent. Birds chirping perfect melodies.
I then took my first step through the twig like tunnel.

Mary's Wonderland

Mary's wonderland.

Mary was a extraordinary seven year old girl who went on wonderful adventures. She felt a burst of excitement run through her as her eyes looked at a pretty cover. Mary loved all kinds of books, fiction, non fiction, picture books and novels. She flipped to the first page and was transported into a new land. Mary's eyes were locked on the page reading each line. Ever since Mary laid her eyes on the first book she ever read, she was gone to another place. Mary felt safe and calm. She felt like she was in paradise and flipped the page to read the next exciting hook. As Mary was flipping through the pages her brain was gathering more and more knowledge each time. After a bit she could imagine herself soaring through the sky just like how the hawk was in Mary’s book.

This week Tamaki started with our 5-7-10 writing. We had to write a character description about the picture above. 5-7-10 means 5 minutes to write as much as possible, 7 minutes to talk to a partner and 10 minutes to finish your character or story off.

Magical chairs

Magical Chairs

Dennis always had a love for chairs.
Brown chairs, skinny chairs or fat chairs,  you choose.
Growing up Dennis had experienced magic.
He had dreamt about becoming a world famous magician.
After a couple years of planning Dennis finally knew what he wanted to do.
Dennis practiced his magic on chairs and became wildly popular for his tricks.
Time went by and he peeked through the drapes before he performed at his last ever show…
Chairs went flying, while the wooden floor slowly turned to grass.
This was his most wonderful performance the world had ever seen.
From then on he is remembered to be one of the greatest magicians who ever lived.

This week I also finished my character description about a picture of a man standing in front of a white background and chairs floating around.

Lost... / Writing

Lost…
I was hiking towards the beautiful, colourful and bright forest.
The sun beaming through the trees and flowers blooming colours.
It was like paradise here. I danced through the grass.
After a while of prancing around I then found myself lost
.  Although the view was great and you could just see hawks flying high and butterflies showing off their beautiful patterns.
The view was so lovely I didn't really mind if was lost for a while.

After a couple of minutes wondering I started getting worried.
It was now six o clock and it was almost dawn.
I had settled on the long green grass and laid my bag on the grass.
I unzipped my bag and pulled out the map I had brought before my trip.
I then laid my eyes and the huge but helpful map. I was located in the middle of the forest so all I needed to do was walk straight ahead.
After awhile of hiking I could feel my legs starting to tremble. I was getting weak fast.
It was now 6:30pm and I could see the sun slowing going down.

After a while of hiking I could slightly see houses and roads. I felt a sudden spark light up in me.
I was so glad I had found my way out. I put my map back into my bag and walked towards the city.
After the journey I felt safe, happy and glad to be home.

This week I have finished writing about the lost man. So if you are wondering why some sentences are highlighted is because the yellow highlight is simple, blue compound and pink was complex. We did this so we all now that we use a mix of different sentences to make the reader think the story was interesting.

Chinese New Year

How Chinese New Year Is celebrated?

The famous Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world. It is celebrated with people
cleaning their homes for the start of spring. People around the world put up red posters
with poetic sentences on them and put them on their doors. Chinese New Year is also the
time where friends and family meet up and enjoy their time together.

Near the end of the holiday people light lanterns and either let them fly in the sky or on let
them float on top of water.  In the middle of the celebration people light fireworks and
firecrackers. People often give unmarried people and kids red envelopes with money inside.

At night people eat their dinner packed with lots of delicious foods. They celebrate with some
specific foods like Shrimp , Noodles and Egg Rolls. These three foods represent a long life,
happiness and gold bars. Foods that are common when eating on Chinese New Year is fish,
Wasabi, Kim chi, vegetables , rice and curry. Other cultures celebrate Chinese New Year
because of the special events that happen.

The tradition is also about 12 animals. These animals competed in a race which the Jade
emperor will chose its year for it to be celebrated. The recent year 2018 is the dog.
Chinese New Year is celebrated because a dragon would arrive on the new moon and
goes when the full moon comes up.

People celebrate Chinese New Year to remember the Chinese legend about the Mysterious
beast who would visited the town and scared the people in the village… But a old man
stumbled towards the village and told them about the beasts weakness. The colour red,
loud noises and more. The beast then left on the full moon never to visit again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week LS2 started writing a explanation about Chinese New Year.  We all worked with a person in another writing group. It was fun working with other people other than peers I work with. Our first thoughts on writing about Chinese New Year was easy, but wasn't as expected. Instead it was quite hard finding out the truth and why it is celebrated. Although its not just celebrated in China but country's all over the world which surprised Brooklyn and I at first, but studying Chinese New Year made much more sense then before we learnt more about the famous tradition.
